  • 2 large eggs, room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the Cinnamon Filling

  • ¾ cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons ground cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • ¼ teaspoon salt

For the Vanilla Glaze

  • 1½ cups powdered sugar
  • 2–3 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Pinch of salt

Optional Toppings

  • Chopped pecans or walnuts
  • Raisins
  • White chocolate chips
  • Caramel sauce
  • Fresh berries
  • Orange zest

Equipment

  • Large mixing bowl
  • Stand mixer with dough hook (optional)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Rolling pin
  • 9×13-inch baking dish
  • Pastry brush
  • Sharp knife or unflavored dental floss
  • Plastic wrap or kitchen towel
  • Cooling rack

Instructions

Step 1: Activate the Yeast

In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, sugar, and yeast.

Let the mixture sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

If the yeast does not foam, start again with fresh yeast.

Step 2: Make the Dough

Add the melted butter, eggs, vanilla extract, and salt.

Gradually mix in the flour until a soft dough forms.

Knead the dough for 8–10 minutes, either by hand or with a stand mixer, until smooth and elastic.

If the dough is sticky, add flour one tablespoon at a time.

Step 3: First Rise

Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl.

Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.

Let rise in a warm place for 1 to 1½ hours, or until doubled in size.

Step 4: Prepare the Filling

In a small bowl, combine:

  • Brown sugar
  • Cinnamon
  • Nutmeg (if using)
  • Salt

Mix well.

Step 5: Roll the Dough

Punch down the risen dough.

Transfer it to a lightly floured surface.

Roll into a 16×12-inch rectangle.

Spread the softened butter evenly over the dough.

Sprinkle the cinnamon sugar mixture evenly on top.

Step 6: Shape the Rolls

Starting from the long side, roll the dough tightly into a log.

Cut into 12 equal rolls using a sharp knife or dental floss.

Arrange the rolls in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.

Step 7: Second Rise

Cover the rolls loosely.

Let them rise for 30–45 minutes, or until puffy.

Meanwhile, preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Step 8: Bake

Bake for 25–30 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the centers are fully baked.

Avoid overbaking to keep the rolls soft.

Step 9: Make the Glaze

Whisk together the powdered sugar, milk, vanilla extract, and salt until smooth.

Adjust the consistency by adding more milk or powdered sugar if needed.

Step 10: Glaze and Serve

Drizzle the glaze over the warm sweet rolls.

Serve immediately while soft and fresh.

Serving Suggestions

Sweet Rolls pair perfectly with:

  • Fresh fruit
  • Greek yogurt
  • Scrambled eggs
  • Bacon
  • Sausage
  • Coffee
  • Hot chocolate
  • Chai latte
  • Fresh orange juice
  • Vanilla ice cream (for dessert)

Tips for the Best Sweet Rolls

  • Use warm—not hot—milk to activate the yeast.
  • Measure the flour accurately to avoid dense rolls.
  • Knead the dough until smooth and elastic for a light texture.
  • Let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free area.
  • Roll the dough tightly for neat, even spirals.
  • Don’t overbake; remove the rolls when lightly golden.
  • Frost the rolls while they’re still warm so the glaze melts into every swirl.

Recipe Variations

Classic Cinnamon Rolls

Prepare as directed and finish with cream cheese frosting instead of vanilla glaze.

Orange Sweet Rolls

Add orange zest to the dough and filling, then top with an orange glaze.

Strawberry Sweet Rolls

Spread strawberry jam over the butter before rolling and finish with a cream cheese glaze.

Blueberry Lemon Rolls

Fill with fresh blueberries, lemon zest, and sugar, then drizzle with a lemon glaze.

Chocolate Sweet Rolls

Sprinkle mini chocolate chips and cocoa sugar over the buttered dough before rolling.

Apple Cinnamon Rolls

Add finely diced apples and extra cinnamon to the filling for a cozy fall version.

Maple Pecan Rolls

Top the rolls with chopped pecans and maple glaze for a rich, nutty flavor.

Storage

Store leftover sweet rolls in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 days or refrigerate for up to 5 days.

Reheat individual rolls in the microwave for 15–20 seconds or warm them in a 325°F (165°C) oven for 8–10 minutes until soft.

To freeze, wrap baked or unbaked rolls tightly and store them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator, then bake or reheat as needed for fresh, homemade sweet rolls.
