Ingredients

For the Apple Filling

  • 6 medium apples (Honeycrisp, Granny Smith, or Fuji), peeled, cored, and diced
  • ⅓ cup (65g) light brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1½ teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • Pinch of salt

For the Crumble Topping

  • 1 cup (125g) all-purpose flour
  • ¾ cup (70g) old-fashioned rolled oats
  • ½ cup (100g) light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup (113g) unsalted butter, melted

Optional Toppings

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Fresh whipped cream
  • Salted caramel sauce
  • Chopped toasted pecans or walnuts

Equipment

  • 6 oven-safe ramekins
  • Large mixing bowls
  • Rubber spatula
  • Baking sheet

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Oven

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

Lightly grease six 8-ounce ramekins and place them on a baking sheet.

Step 2: Make the Apple Filling

In a large bowl, combine the diced apples, brown sugar, granulated sugar, lemon juice, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, cornstarch, and salt.

Toss until the apples are evenly coated.

Divide the apple mixture evenly among the prepared ramekins.

Step 3: Prepare the Crumble Topping

In another bowl, mix together the flour, oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.

Pour in the melted butter and stir with a fork until coarse, buttery crumbs form.

Sprinkle the crumble topping generously over each ramekin.

Step 4: Bake

Bake for 35–40 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apple filling is bubbling around the edges.

Step 5: Cool

Allow the crumbles to cool for 10 minutes before serving. This helps the filling thicken slightly while remaining warm and delicious.

Step 6: Serve

Top each apple crumble with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, caramel sauce, or toasted nuts, if desired.

Serve warm and enjoy.

Tips for Success

  • Use a combination of sweet and tart apples for the best flavor.
  • Cut the apples into evenly sized pieces for uniform baking.
  • Keep the crumble topping slightly chunky for a crisp texture.
  • Place the ramekins on a baking sheet to catch any bubbling juices.
  • Add raisins, dried cranberries, or chopped pecans to the filling for extra flavor.

Serving Suggestions

Individual Apple Crumbles pair wonderfully with:

  • Vanilla ice cream
  • Cinnamon ice cream
  • Fresh whipped cream
  • Salted caramel sauce
  • Hot coffee
  • Chai tea
  • Hot apple cider

Storage

Cover and refrigerate leftover apple crumbles for up to 4 days. Reheat in a 350°F (175°C) oven for 10–15 minutes or microwave individual portions for about 45–60 seconds. The unbaked crumbles can also be assembled and frozen for up to 3 months. Bake from frozen, adding an extra 10–15 minutes to the baking time.
