In a small bowl, combine:
- Mayonnaise
- Ketchup
- Pickle relish
- Mustard
- Vinegar
- Sugar
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Salt
Mix until smooth.
Cover and refrigerate while preparing the fries so the flavors can blend.
Step 2: Caramelize the Onions
Heat butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
Add the diced onions and salt.
Cook slowly for 25–35 minutes, stirring frequently, until the onions become soft, golden brown, and sweet.
If the onions begin sticking, add a tablespoon of water and continue cooking.
For extra restaurant-style flavor, stir in brown sugar during the final few minutes.
Set aside.
Step 3: Cook the Fries
Oven Method
Preheat oven according to the package instructions.
Spread frozen fries on a baking sheet in a single layer.
Bake until golden and crispy, usually 25–30 minutes.
Season with salt, garlic powder, paprika, and pepper.
Air Fryer Method
Cook frozen fries at 400°F (200°C) for 15–20 minutes, shaking halfway through.
Cook until extra crispy.
Homemade Potato Method
- Cut russet potatoes into thin fries.
- Soak in cold water for 30 minutes.
- Drain and dry completely.
- Fry or bake until crispy.
- Season immediately.
Step 4: Assemble the Animal-Style Fries
Spread the hot fries onto a serving platter or oven-safe dish.
Layer the cheese slices over the fries.
Place under the broiler for 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts.
Remove carefully.
Top with:
- Caramelized onions
- Animal-style sauce drizzle
Add extra toppings if desired.
Step 5: Serve
Serve immediately while the fries are hot, crispy, and covered in melted cheese.
Enjoy with burgers, sandwiches, milkshakes, or as a stand-alone snack.

Storage
Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 2 days.

Sauce: Store separately in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.
Tips for the Best Animal-Style Fries
- Use thin fries or shoestring fries for the closest fast-food texture.
- Make the onions slowly—rushing them prevents deep caramelized flavor.
- Add sauce after baking to prevent soggy fries.
- Melt the cheese directly onto the fries for the best texture.
- American cheese creates the smooth, classic fast-food melt.
- Cook fries extra crispy because the toppings will soften them slightly.
- Prepare the sauce ahead of time for a stronger, more balanced flavor.
Recipe Notes
- For a shortcut version, use frozen fries, store-bought burger sauce, and pre-caramelized onions.
- Add chopped cooked burger meat on top for a loaded cheeseburger-style version.
- Swap American cheese for cheddar, Monterey Jack, or pepper jack for different flavors.
- Make a spicy version by adding hot sauce or diced jalapeños to the special sauce.
- These fries are best enjoyed fresh, as the crispy texture is the highlight of the dish.
