  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder

For Assembly

  • 4 sesame seed hamburger buns
  • 4 additional bottom bun pieces (for the middle layer)
  • 8 slices American cheese
  • 2 cups finely shredded iceberg lettuce
  • ½ cup finely diced onion
  • 16 dill pickle slices
  • 2 tablespoons butter (for toasting buns)

Equipment

  • Large skillet or griddle
  • Spatula
  • Mixing bowls
  • Baking sheet (optional)
  • Sharp knife

Instructions

Step 1: Make the Big Mac Sauce

In a small bowl, combine:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Pickle relish
  • Mustard
  • Ketchup
  • Vinegar
  • Sugar
  • Paprika
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Salt

Stir until smooth.

Cover and refrigerate for at least 15 minutes to allow the flavors to blend.

Step 2: Prepare the Burger Patties

Divide the ground beef into 8 equal portions.

Roll each portion into a ball, then flatten into very thin patties about slightly larger than the buns.

Season both sides with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

Tip: Thin patties are essential for achieving the classic fast-food burger texture.

Step 3: Toast the Buns

Lightly butter the cut sides of the buns.

Toast them in a skillet over medium heat for 1–2 minutes until golden.

Set aside.

Step 4: Cook the Burger Patties

Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.

Cook the patties for about:

  • 1½–2 minutes per side

until browned and cooked through.

Place a slice of American cheese on each patty during the final minute of cooking.

Allow the cheese to melt.

Step 5: Prepare the Bun Layers

A Big Mac has three bun sections:

  1. Bottom bun
  2. Middle bun piece
  3. Top bun

Spread Big Mac sauce on the bottom and middle bun pieces.

Add shredded lettuce over each sauce layer.

Step 6: Assemble the Burger

Build each Big Mac in this order:

Bottom Layer:

  • Bottom bun
  • Big Mac sauce
  • Lettuce
  • Chopped onions
  • Pickles
  • Cheese-topped beef patty

Middle Layer:

  • Middle bun piece
  • Big Mac sauce
  • Lettuce
  • Onions
  • Pickles
  • Second cheese-topped beef patty

Finish:

  • Top sesame seed bun

Gently press the burger together.

Step 7: Serve

Serve immediately with:

  • French fries
  • Onion rings
  • Milkshakes
  • Soft drinks
  • Coleslaw

Enjoy your homemade Big Mac while the patties are hot and the sauce is creamy.

Tips for the Best Copycat Big Mac

  • Use 80/20 ground beef for juicy, flavorful patties.
  • Smash the patties thin for a more authentic fast-food style.
  • Toasting the buns adds flavor and prevents sogginess.
  • Finely dice onions to match the classic texture.
  • Chill the sauce before serving for the best flavor.
  • Use American cheese for the signature creamy melt.
  • Shred iceberg lettuce very finely for the closest restaurant-style crunch.
  • Do not overcook thin patties—they cook very quickly.

Recipe Notes

  • If you do not have an extra middle bun, lightly toast a regular bun bottom and use it as the center layer.
  • Add extra sauce for a more indulgent version.
  • For a spicy twist, mix a little hot sauce or cayenne pepper into the Big Mac sauce.
  • Turkey or chicken patties can be substituted for a lighter variation.
  • This recipe works great for parties—prepare the sauce and toppings ahead, then cook patties fresh before serving.
