- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
For the Brown Sugar BBQ Sauce
- 1½ cups barbecue sauce
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 tablespoons honey
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
- ½ teaspoon chili powder
- ¼ teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
Garnish
- Chopped fresh parsley
- Green onions, sliced
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Chicken
Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
Pat the chicken dry with paper towels.
Place it in a large bowl.
Drizzle with olive oil.
Season with:
- Salt
- Black pepper
- Garlic powder
- Onion powder
- Smoked paprika
Rub the seasonings evenly over all sides.
Step 2: Make the BBQ Glaze
In a medium bowl whisk together:
- Barbecue sauce
- Brown sugar
- Honey
- Worcestershire sauce
- Apple cider vinegar
- Garlic
- Dijon mustard
- Chili powder
- Cayenne pepper
Whisk until smooth and glossy.
Step 3: Arrange the Chicken
Place the seasoned chicken in a lightly greased 9×13-inch baking dish or on a foil-lined baking sheet.
Brush generously with the BBQ glaze.
Reserve about ½ cup sauce for later.
Step 4: Bake
Bake uncovered for 30 minutes.
Remove the chicken from the oven.
Brush with additional sauce.
Return to the oven for another 10–15 minutes until:
- The chicken is fully cooked
- The glaze is caramelized
- The internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C)
Step 5: Broil for Extra Caramelization
For sticky, slightly charred edges:
Broil the chicken for 2–3 minutes.
Watch carefully to prevent burning because of the sugar content.
Step 6: Rest
Allow the chicken to rest for 5 minutes before serving.
This helps keep the meat juicy and flavorful.
Step 7: Garnish and Serve
Sprinkle with:
- Fresh parsley
- Sliced green onions
Serve hot with extra barbecue sauce on the side.
Grilling Instructions
- Preheat grill to medium heat.
- Oil the grates lightly.
- Grill chicken for 25–30 minutes, turning occasionally.
- Brush with BBQ sauce during the last 10 minutes of cooking.
- Continue grilling until the chicken reaches 165°F (74°C) and develops a caramelized glaze.

Expert Tips
Use Bone-In Chicken
Bone-in pieces stay juicier and develop more flavor during cooking.
Apply Sauce in Layers
Brushing on multiple coats creates a thick, sticky glaze.
Broil Carefully
Brown sugar can burn quickly under high heat.
Let the Chicken Rest
Resting helps the juices redistribute throughout the meat.
Use Your Favorite BBQ Sauce
A smoky, tangy sauce works especially well with the sweetness of brown sugar.
