Ingredients
- 4 (15-ounce/425g) cans navy beans or great northern beans, drained and rinsed
- 8 slices bacon, chopped
- 1 medium yellow onion, finely diced
- 3 cloves garlic, minced
- ¾ cup ketchup
- ⅓ cup barbecue sauce
- ¼ cup packed brown sugar
- ¼ cup molasses
- 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt (adjust to taste)
Optional Garnishes
- Chopped fresh parsley
- Sliced green onions
- Crumbled cooked bacon
Equipment
- Large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven
- Wooden spoon
- Measuring cups and spoons
- Cutting board
- Sharp knife
Instructions
Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 325°F (163°C).
If you don’t have an oven-safe skillet, lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish for later use.
Step 2: Cook the Bacon
Heat a large oven-safe skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
Add the chopped bacon and cook until crispy, about 8–10 minutes.
Using a slotted spoon, transfer the bacon to a plate, leaving about 2 tablespoons of bacon fat in the pan.
Step 3: Sauté the Onion and Garlic
Add the diced onion to the skillet and cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened.
Add the minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds, just until fragrant.
Step 4: Make the Sauce
Reduce the heat to low.
Stir in the ketchup, barbecue sauce, brown sugar, molasses, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, apple cider vinegar, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt.
Mix well and let the sauce simmer for about 3–4 minutes until slightly thickened.
Step 5: Add the Beans
Stir the drained beans and most of the cooked bacon into the sauce, reserving a small amount of bacon for garnish if desired.
Mix gently until all the beans are evenly coated.
If using a separate baking dish, transfer the mixture now.
Step 6: Bake
Bake uncovered for 1 hour to 1 hour 15 minutes, stirring once halfway through.
The sauce should become thick, rich, and bubbly.
If you prefer an even thicker sauce, bake for an additional 10–15 minutes.
Step 7: Rest
Remove the baked beans from the oven and let them rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
This allows the sauce to thicken even more.
Step 8: Serve
Sprinkle with the reserved bacon, chopped parsley, or sliced green onions.
Serve warm as a side dish or hearty main course.

Tips for the Best Baked Beans
- Use thick-cut bacon for extra smoky flavor.
- Rinse canned beans well to remove excess sodium and starch.
- Molasses gives the beans their classic rich, deep flavor.
- Bake uncovered so the sauce thickens beautifully.
- Stir once during baking to prevent sticking.
- Taste before serving and adjust the sweetness or acidity with a little more brown sugar or vinegar if needed.
- Leftover baked beans often taste even better the next day as the flavors continue to develop.
Recipe Variations
Vegetarian Baked Beans
Omit the bacon and use olive oil to sauté the onions. Add smoked paprika or a dash of liquid smoke for a smoky flavor.
Spicy Baked Beans
Add diced jalapeños, cayenne pepper, or your favorite hot sauce for a spicy kick.
Maple Baked Beans
Replace the molasses with pure maple syrup for a slightly sweeter, rich flavor.
Ground Beef Baked Beans
Brown 1 pound of lean ground beef with the onions for a heartier dish.
Bourbon Baked Beans
Stir in 2–3 tablespoons of bourbon before baking for a deeper, smoky flavor.
Pineapple Baked Beans
Add 1 cup of crushed pineapple or pineapple tidbits for a sweet and tangy tropical twist.
Storage
Allow the baked beans to cool completely before transferring them to an airtight container.
Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. Reheat gently on the stovetop over medium-low heat or in the microwave, adding a splash of water if the sauce becomes too thick.
Baked beans also freeze well for up to 3 months. Cool completely before transferring to freezer-safe containers or bags. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator and reheat until hot before serving.
